Prevent, Protect, and Plan During Public Health Week
During National Public Health Week in April, the American Public Health Association encourages Americans to live stronger, longer lives by focusing on 3 P’s: Prevent, Protect, and Plan. Whether you are a health professional interested in promoting healthy lifestyles or someone looking for ways to manage your own health, you can take action to encourage healthy habits.
Prevent health problems
Poor diet and a lack of physical activity can lead to preventable health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Active Living Partners offers realistic, personalized programs to help people improve their health by learning to eat better and become more active. Healthy Eating Every Day follows the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for a healthy diet and addresses the problem areas that most people need to change.
Active Living Every Day provides practical guidance in how to get at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity each day. By encouraging moderate-intensity activities such as walking, gardening, dancing, and water aerobics, Active Living Every Day suggests an approach that can fit into any lifestyle. Healthy lifestyle choices allow people to enjoy a high quality of life, no matter what their age. For more ideas on how to offer these programs to help people eat well and be active for a lifetime, visit the Active Living Partners Web site at www.ActiveLiving.info.
Protect health
Schedule and promote regular medical check-ups and screenings to protect against disease. Many chronic diseases can be treated if detected early. Participate in health fairs, lunch and learns, and other events to gather information or to let people know about the programs and services you provide. Let your community or organization know that you are a credible source for health improvement solutions.
Plan to manage health
“Plan your work, and work your plan.” Take charge of your own health and help others to create a plan to manage their health; people shouldn’t leave their health up to someone else. Encourage your employees or clients to see a health care professional on a regular basis, follow any prescribed treatment, ask questions, and seek out needed services. By offering Active Living Partners programs, you can help people create a personalized eating or physical activity plan they will enjoy and can follow for a lifetime.
