A Couch Potato No More

After selling my home and moving to a retirement community, I found myself sitting in my lounge chair watching TV—even when there was nothing worth watching on at the time. Pounds gradually added themselves to my more than adequate body. The heavier I got, the more I sat. The slightest task became a monumental chore. I knew I had to do something to reverse the way my life was going.
When I saw the posting on the community bulletin board that an “Active for Life” program was being held in my area, I contacted the sponsors and signed up for the program. I was skeptical, but I thought it was worth a try.
This 20-week program promised no miracles, but offered baby steps that were not so drastic that I might give up even before starting the program. Halfway through the course I realized that I had, indeed become more active—I even lost 10 pounds in the process. I became conscious that I was feeling better during the day and sleeping better at night. My breathing was less labored and my joints less painful. Shopping and cleaning were not the formidable responsibility they had been only weeks before.
I would recommend the Active for Life program to those who have allowed themselves to become couch potatoes or who have more weight to carry around than they need. This is an amazing program that makes getting more active as easy as eating that last piece of chocolate pie before bedtime—and much better for you as well.
