Looking Back on ALP in 2007
As we look back on a successful year of implementing Active Living Every Day and Healthy Eating Every Day across the United States—and around the world—we thank each of our dedicated facilitators, loyal supporters, and so many of the 300-plus hard-working Human Kinetics staff for their part in carrying out our mission of helping people make positive changes that improve their health and well-being.
Training Stats
- We trained 169 new facilitators this year, bringing our total to 508.
- New facilitators in Korea, Australia, England, and France joined our network of providers.
- We had another successful year conducting our popular Web-based trainings.
- The Cooper Institute hosted an on-site training for ALP programs on September 11 and 12.
- We traveled to the Sarasota, Florida, County Government offices, the Arkansas Department of Public Health, the OASIS Institute in St. Louis, and Pennsylvania’s University of Scranton to conduct on-site training workshops for their staff.
- We trained the first two Healthy Eating Every Day instructor trainers and three new Active Living Every Day instructor trainers. These experienced program providers offer training workshops throughout the year.
Transitions and Improvements
- Bhibha M. Das, MPH, joined Human Kinetics in August 2007 as the ALP program manager. Former program manager Michelle Maloney accepted a promotion as professional education sales director.
- We hosted 10 very successful teleconferences for facilitators and directors.
- Bhibha created PowerPoint presentation files for both Active Living Every Day and Healthy Eating Every Day, now available on the ALP facilitator resource page.
ALP: Out & About
- Over the next three years, researchers from Klein Buendel, Kaiser Permanente, and Healthy Ever Afters will conduct surveys and interviews of Active Living Every Day providers as well as those organizations that chose not to provide the program. The investigators hope to identify key organizational factors that predict why some groups will adopt and implement an evidence-based physical activity program and why others don’t. The study is funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, an arm of the National Institutes of Health.
- The Center for Healthy Aging, part of the National Council on Aging (NCOA), added Active Living Every Day to their list of recommended evidence-based health promotion programs (Healthy Aging Programs).
- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Reference Guide of Physical Activity Programs for Older Adults: A Resource for Planning Intervention includes Active Living Every Day as a program that can help to preserve physical function in older adults.
- Stacy Wegley (ALED program director), Sara Wilcox, and Doris Estremera-Rohleder presented Active for Life: Developing Partners and Strategies to Ensure Maintenance and Sustainability at the CDC-funded Healthy Aging Research Network in February. They gave an overview of Active Living Every Day and Active Choices, the two programs used in the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation–funded Active for Life initiative.
- At the National Council on Aging and the American Society on Aging national conference in March in Chicago, three presenters associated with Active Living Partners spoke. Jocelyn Tobnick and Rosa Aguirre, both of the OASIS Institute, participated in a symposium to highlight the successes and challenges of four programs delivered by volunteer leaders, including Active Living Every Day. Marcia Ory, professor at the School of Rural Public Health at Texas A&M University, participated in Strategies to Assure Maintenance of Evidence-Based Physical Activity Programs using Active Living Every Day to illustrate key points. ALP staff also attended the conference as part of the trade show.
- Rosa Aguirre of the OASIS Institute represented ALP at the National Association of Health and Fitness Conference in California in April. She spoke about OASIS’ Health and Human Services Award–winning Active Start program, which includes Active Living Every Day.
- The National Health, Wellness, and Prevention Conference in Las Vegas in May offered the ALP staff an intimate, focused venue for introducing the Active Living Every Day and Healthy Eating Every Day programs as worksite wellness options.
- Bhibha Das attended the 135th American Public Health Association Conference in Washington, DC, where Human Kinetics sponsored the first Physical Activity section meeting and reception. The conference was a great opportunity to meet public health researchers working on obesity prevention and learn more about the trends in physical activity and nutrition research.
- Michelle Maloney presented Health ProMOTION: Motivating People to Move at the Wisconsin Parks and Recreation Association conference in November. Conference attendees also had an opportunity to talk with Human Kinetics staff at the trade show booth.
