Second Edition of Active Living Every Day to Incorporate New Guidelines and Best Practices

You asked, and we listened.

Program facilitators like you asked us to offer a shorter version of the Active Living Every Day program, update the photos and research in the book, include information on strength training, and share best practices from other program providers. Working with the original outstanding authors of this book, we’re pleased to announce that Active Living Every Day, Second Edition, is under way and will be available for January 2011 classes. In addition to the new edition of the participant book, we’re revising all the facilitator materials: lesson plans, facilitator guide, online facilitator course, and more.

This fall, we’ll offer webinars for all Active Living Every Day facilitators to explain the changes you’ll see and provide you with the new materials. You’ll have an opportunity to ask questions, see what’s new, and learn how to order materials for your next classes.

Here’s a summary of what to expect when the second edition of Active Living Every Day debuts.

  • We’ve based this book on the latest psychological research about behavior change and our experiences using the program. But we’ve gone a step further. The original program lasted 20 weeks. More recently we tested a 12-week version of the same program. It proved to be just as effective in helping people make lasting changes in physical activity habits. This revised edition of Active Living Every Day is based on a 12 session program. We think it will appeal to more people and thus encourage more people to become active.
  • The second edition incorporates the recent federal physical activity guidelines. Do you find that people are wondering how in the world they can manage to fit 150 minutes of activity every week into an already-crowded personal schedule? The second edition of Active Living Every Day helps participants understand the federal physical activity guidelines—what they mean, why they are important, and how to make small changes that allow a person to meet the standards and ultimately improve their health.
  • We feature new photos and vignettes that appeal to a wider audience. Participants in an Active Living Every Day program learn realistic strategies for becoming more active; they hear examples from people like them in similar situations and adapt the strategies to their own lives.
  • Thanks to feedback from our facilitators, we were able to create a program based on what people need, want, and enjoy. We saw what worked and what didn’t. From our participants’ and facilitators’ experiences, we’ve improved on one of the first scientifically tested programs for increasing lifestyle physical activity. As you are aware, unlike many other programs, ours has the following benefits:

    • Considers your readiness to change behavior
    • Emphasizes moderate-intensity activities
    • Helps you increase the intensity of your activities if you wish
    • Lets you create your own activity plan
    • Helps you solve problems and overcome obstacles
    • Concentrates on activities you can add to your daily routine
    • Gives you tips for making other healthy changes in your life
