ALP/IHRSA Partnership Celebrated at IHRSA International Convention

Human Kinetics staff members Theresa Campbell, Michele Guerra, and Philana Hancock recently participated in the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association’s (IHRSA) 22nd Annual International Convention and Trade Show. IHRSA is a not-for-profit trade association representing health and fitness facilities, gyms, spas, sports clubs, and suppliers worldwide. The mission of IHRSA (www.ihrsa.org) is to grow, protect, and promote the [health club] industry, and to provide its members with benefits that will help them be more successful.

The convention is the highlighted annual event for more than 6,500 U.S. and international member clubs of IHRSA. A broad spectrum of people involved in the health and fitness club industry attend, including owners, general managers, and senior management; marketing and programming staff; fitness instructors and personal trainers; and operational personnel.

Active Living Partners recently formed a partnership with IHRSA to promote the Active Living Every Day course to IHRSA member clubs. IHRSA members who implement Active Living Every Day will receive a significant discount off the first-year license fee. The convention was a great opportunity to celebrate that partnership, increase awareness among IHRSA members about the benefits available to them through the partnership, and to introduce them the Active Living Partners program.

IHRSA members had several opportunities to learn about the inactive adult market and how to use the Active Living Every Day course to reach inactive adults. Active Living Partners director, Michele Guerra, presented an educational seminar titled “How clubs can attract inactive adults in their communities.” The seminar was well attended and received high evaluations. Michele and IHRSA marketing director Rick Devereux are already planning educational programming in this area for next year’s convention.

In addition, both Guerra and Active Living Partners Associate, Philana Hancock, provided Active Living Every Day sample classes during the convention. These sessions offered convention attendees the opportunity to experience an actual Active Living Every Day class and to ask questions about the program.

Active Living Partner’s mission to help sedentary adults adopt and maintain physically active lifestyles fits perfectly with IHRSA’s long-term initiative to promote exercise adoption and membership in health clubs worldwide. As part of this initiative, IHRSA hopes to increase membership in their clubs to 100 million people by 2010. The organization understands that focusing on reaching inactive adults is critical to meeting this goal.
