ICAA And Human Kinetics Form Partnership To Bring Physical Activity Benefits To Older Adults
CHAMPAIGN, IL-The International Council on Active Aging (ICAA), the world's largest senior fitness and wellness association, and Active Living Partners, a division of Human Kinetics, the information leader in physical activity, are joining forces to increase physical activity among older adults.
Active Living Partners, developed by Human Kinetics and The Cooper Institute, is a comprehensive behavior change program aimed at helping sedentary adults adopt and maintain physically active lifestyles. Their course, Active Living Every Day, is a scientifically proven program that teaches to people realistic ways to incorporate physical activity into their lives. The course also helps people build lifestyle skills that will enable them to stay physically active over time, such as addressing and overcoming barriers to physical activity, realistic goal setting and time management.
Colin Milner, the ICAA’s CEO, believes, “Working with Human Kinetics will be an exciting and valuable endeavor for the ICAA. Promoting the Active Living Every Day course fits perfectly with the ICAA mission of improving the quality of life for older adults, and allows us to provide even more resources for our members to help them empower older adults.” Through the new partnership with Human Kinetics, ICAA will be encouraging its 2,000 member organizations to deliver the program, beginning with the cornerstone course, Active Living Every Day. To facilitate this delivery, ICAA V.P. of Education Julie McNeney, a certified Active Living Facilitator, will conduct Facilitator Training Workshops for ICAA members.
Through the ICAA and Active Living Partners, ICAA members will have access to comprehensive training, superior program materials, and ongoing support. According to Michele Guerra, Active Living Partners Director, “Our partnership with the ICAA is another great step towards extending the benefits of a healthy, active lifestyle to all people. Working with the ICAA, we will be able to train an important segment of professionals who will then, through the delivery of the Active Living Every Day course, help significant numbers of older adults become physically active”.
The Active Living Every Day course has already been identified as showing great promise in helping older adults become physically active. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the United States’ largest foundation devoted to improving Americans’ health and health care, selected the Active Living Every Day course as one of two interventions to be used in their upcoming multi-million dollar grant project, Active for Life. This four-year study will test ways to increase physical activity in sedentary adults over the age of 50.
The ICAA is an organization dedicated to changing the way we age by uniting professionals in the retirement, assisted living, fitness, rehabilitation, recreation, and wellness fields to help dispel society's myths about aging. The council supports these professionals with education, information, resources and tools, so they can empower aging baby boomers and older adults to improve their quality of life and maintain their dignity.
Human Kinetics is the information leader in physical activity, producing a myriad of products in all areas of physical activity that help people worldwide lead healthier, more active lives.
