Ten New Centers to Offer Active Living Courses
Active Living Partners is pleased to welcome 10 new community centers. These organizations have recently trained staff as Active Living facilitators. They have begun offering the Active Living Every Day course in their communities, or they plan to in the near future. Here’s some information about our newest providers.
Terrace Community Management, Houston, Texas
Terrace Community Management owns six independent living facilities. Judi Shrader will be facilitating Active Living Every Day courses to the residents of these facilities. She plans to enroll approximately 20 participants per course. Eventually, Judi hopes to train more facilitators and make the course part of their regular activity program.
South County Family YMCA, Venice, Florida
Melanie Mullally is the director and facilitator at the South County Family YMCA in Venice, Florida. Melanie plans to target sedentary people in the general community for their Active Living Every Day course. The course will be held somewhere other than at the YMCA in hopes that an off-site facility will be less intimidating to course participants.
Pensacourt Inc., Pensacola, Florida
Pensacourt Inc. is a health club owned by Linda Sherlock, a nurse, and Keith Sherlock, a physician. The Sherlocks approach their business from a wellness angle, promoting healthy living within their club. The Sherlocks are offering Active Living Every Day as a corporate workplace intervention. They serve a multitude of corporations in the Pensacola area. In time, they may offer the course in their club as way to get spouses and family members of club members interested in physical activity.
The Edge Training Club, Kalamazoo, Michigan
The Edge Training Club is a full-service health club located in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The club delivers comprehensive and advanced health, fitness, and prevention programs; services; education; and facilities for members. Cindy Feinauer and Gerene Vanden Bosch are the Active Living Every Day facilitators for The Edge.
Miramount Sport Center, Ft. Collins, Colorado
The Miramount Sport Center in Ft. Collins, Colorado, is recruiting adults over 30 who are sedentary or need education on why physical activity is beneficial. Chrisy Theil is the director of Miramount’s Active Living program. She and Linda Bestor recently completed their facilitator training. Linda hopes to have between 20 - 30 participants in each class and have two to three classes running at a time. She is interested in targeting corporations that would support the program. Miramount is a community fitness center and gym with an excellent reputation toward all levels of fitness and needs.
Health for Life, Independence, Kansas
Donna Janesek is facilitating an Active Living course for Health for Life of Mercy Hospital in Independence, Kansas. The Health for Life center does outpatient physical therapy and also serves as a community fitness center and day spa. Donna is targeting sedentary people in the general community for her Active Living course. Independence is a small community; Donna advertised the Active Living Every Day course using radio and newspaper ads, meetings, and health fairs.
Health Quality Partners, Warrington, Pennsylvania
Health Quality Partners are targeting middle-aged and older adults for their Active Living program course started May 28. Stephanie Wiesser and her staff work with people to prevent disease progression through healthy lifestyle and appropriate health care. In addition to Active Living Every Day, they offer courses in weight and stress management. Their center houses a spa, cafe, health club, and various independent health care offices and hospital services.
Health Quality Partners has two Active Living facilitators, but they plan to add more to work with their Medicare population. They will be hosting our East Coast regional facilitator training this November.
Purdue University WorkLife Center, West Lafayette, Indiana
Part of Purdue University’s WorkLife-Wellness mission is to improve the health of employees, which they plan to do through Active Living Every Day. The WorkLife Center is targeting faculty, staff, retirees, and spouses at Purdue University. Mindy Paulet plans to implement their first course September 4, 2003. She will be the facilitator and will instruct three classes to start. She hopes to implement more classes and train more facilitators in the future.
Vermont Department of Health, Burlington, Vermont
Susan Coburn heads the Active Living program at the Vermont Department of Health. They are implementing Active Living Every Day through a program called Ladies First. This program serves low-income women who are over 40, are uninsured or underinsured, and have been found to be at risk for cardiovascular diseases. Ladies First is funded under a program called WISE WOMAN at the Centers for Disease Control. Ten health outreach specialists offer Active Living Every Day at 12 different district offices across the state of Vermont.
Westport/Weston YMCA, Westport, Connecticut
Westport/Weston YMCA is partnering with healthcare providers of all kinds. In addition, they plan to market Active Living Every Day to corporations, non-profit agencies, and YMCA's in the area. They have two facilitators, Geri Zatcoff and Linda Gottlieb.
