Take an active trip
The American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) has identified ten cities as the most walkable in the USA. These cities include New York City, Seattle, and Cleveland, and share characteristics such as scenic walkways, lots of cultural sites, good weather, and low crime rates. Maggie Spilner, Active Living Every Day facilitator and former Prevention editor, has written a helpful description of these cities to aid travelers in finding ways to stay active while on the road.
- New York, New York boasts 1,700 parks, lots of culture and sites, and relatively few bad-air days.
- San Francisco, California has great parks, wide beaches, and picturesque neighborhoods. Hills increase intensity for those wanting more challenge.
- Boston, Massachusetts has charming historic neighborhoods, beautiful parks, and river trails.
- Philadelphia, Pennsylvania offers history, great walking paths, and a fabulous Japanese house and gardens. Guided walking tours are available.
- Seattle, Washington offers a variety of beautiful scenery, including ocean and mountain views, and lots of green areas to walk.
- Denver, Colorado features sunny skies and mild temperatures, 203 parks, and great views of the Rocky Mountains.
- Washington, DC boasts history, culture, and a wealth of museums and monuments.
- Chicago, Illinois features over 500 parks, a low crime rate, and an 18-mile lakefront walk-run path.
- Portland, Oregon offers abundant trails within 5 minutes of downtown, and a lush green environment.
- Cleveland, Ohio features a 60-mile string of parks, river and lakefront walking areas, and unique tourist attractions.
